All of the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradales made were in red, except for one. This is the story of that one.
Chassis 750.33.111 targata Varese was ordered new by Count Corrado Agusta, the heir to the Agusta aviation company founded by a Sicilian aristocrat and now controlled by the Italian state. He insisted that his Alfa be Blu Reale, and in it he fitted helicopter seats.
It appeared at Retromobile Paris in 1987 and was also seen in the ‘80s with an Achilli Motors of Milan decal.
The car was later, tragically, repainted in Rosso Alfa 501 and hidden away in the private Hayashi collection in Japan.
In 2017, the car was sold to Albert Spiess, famous Swiss collector who, according to Marcel Massini, in total owns 4 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradales (there were only 18 made, maximum). Spiess won the Villa d’Este Coppa d’Oro in 2018 with chassis 750.33.110.
Under Spiess’s ownership, the car was restored back to its original specifications by Egon Zweimüller. The car was supposed to make its debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2020 for Alfa Romeo’s 110th anniversary, but COVID shut down that plan, and the car has yet to make its reentrance to public life.
